Notes augmentedWe've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)! Product tweaks and bug kill
- In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
- If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
- The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
- If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
- If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
New FCK fixes rich text editor!
- We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5 for improved visual design!
- When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
- RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
- An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
- The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers
- Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)
LiveJournal CaresWe’re pleased to introduce you to lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.
In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop. Papered in postcardsA couple of weeks ago, we asked you to send in postcards to surround us with LiveJournal community. | Title: Wetting Boughs (1/1) Author: sinecure - My master fic listCharacter/Pairing: Rose, Ten Rating: All ages Genre: Gen, humor, fluff, fluff, fluff Summary: Rose wants to go somewhere and the Doctor wonders why. Disclaimer: I don't own Doctor Who. Author's Notes: This fic hasn't seen a single beta, and I'm sorry for that. I realized how long it'd been since I posted a fic and wanted to get one out there, and since this one is ready, minus the beta, I figured it was the best candidate. Read it on my fic journal: Wetting Boughs. At Gallifreyan Dreams. Or on Teaspoon. - Mood:nervous

| Mods, please delete if this is not allowed.... According to David on today's LBC interview, he's currently taking dialect classes for his accent and is waiting for his visa to come through. After that he should be spending three weeks in LA shooting the pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer for NBC and will hopefully be done by Christmas. If that's the timetable now, I assume the execs will view the pilot around the same time they are making decisions on other pilots, which would be late winter/early spring. We should know by spring if they decide to pick it up. Which means, the time to act is now if you want to see this happen! ( Click here to see how you can help... ) | |

| Title: Bar Night: An Alternate Take (or: The Dangers of Not Re-reading One’s Own Work) Author: jlrpuck Rating: K Characters: Mickey, Jake, James, Penny, and Anna Disclaimer: Characters from Doctor Who are the property of BBC, and are used with the greatest of love and respect; no profit is intended from the writing or sharing of this story. Summary: You’ve read Bar Night --but what if it actually happened like this? Notes: Written for hazelwho, who won my services through a generous donation to the September Support Stacie auction. Her prompt was, “Another missing scene from TWoT like Bar Night, where the guys discuss Carlisle and Rose's relationship.” I, uh…well, as the title and summary imply, I failed to actually re-read the relevant bits of TWoT, and so it wasn’t until after I’d written this and sent it off to Ms. Who that I worked out that I set this on exactly the same night as “Bar Night”. Much facepalming ensued, as well as a promise to Ms. Who to re-write it. She, bless her, wrote back suggesting this go up as a “Clue”-style “Or maybe it happened like this!” thing, and my beta’s agreed. So here it is. You’re still getting another story, Ms. Who, set at a different time during TWoT. I just need to move house first. *hugs* Many thanks to earlgreytea68 and chicklet73 for their beta and feedback on this. Any errors in the story, though, are mine and mine alone. | From xebgoc, by way of jlrpuck: Very good NPR essay about the theory of spoilers. I'll note that it doesn't actually contain spoilers, exactly, at least not for anything aired since 2005. Which is exactly the point of the article. ( On Spoilers. Not Spoilery. Listen, folks, if I know it, you probably do, too. )But that's all new spoilers. Old spoilers...well, it's a different story. Which makes me wonder. There's two parts to that last DW episode, right? I wonder if a Mundane Spoiler Challenge would be appropriate? :) OMG, Spoiler alert! William Hartnell regenerates into Patrick Troughton! | |

| I'm sorry this is such a stupid question. I thought David was hosting the Christian O'Connell show all this week but can only find audio for yesterday. Did his 5 days start yesterday or Monday? If it did start Monday, could some please point me in the direction of mp3s of the days I missed?
Thanks! | |

| So I'm curious, because this is giving me a hard time, and has been for a while now. So I'm working on this fic, see. It's pretty AU from Journey's End. Well basically it is The Stolen Earth/Journey's End but AU. However, I haven't dug very deeply into the plot... but at the same time I've carried it through to the crucible, and I never meant to be there. I don't want to get any further into the plot (mostly 'cause I have no ideas where that's concerned; it's also not really the point of the fic), but I'm afraid if I skip it all that it'll seem rushed and lame and stupid. Basically it's kind of just a series of different scenes carried out through the episode... it kind of skips and jumps in some places anyway. I realize this is being kind of vague... I hope you guys realize what I'm talking about, at least a little bit. :P Anyway my question is Poll #1484270 who fic question
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: All, participants: 21 would it be jarring and/or weird to not go into detail on the plot and how it's different from canon? (i.e. how the Daleks are defeated, planets put back in place, etc) | |

| Final wordcount for the day: 10,970. Which meets my goal for the day, so yay me. I'll admit that I'm disappointed, though - I was sort of hoping to hit 15K so I could post the OT3 fic. Total wordcount for the month: 12,199. Which is still about 6K less than where I'm supposed to be. But more worrying is that....I'm actually not that far from the end of the story. I knew this might happen - after all, I'm actually writing a children's book, which is something of a first for me. I think I might very well wrap the thing up in another 10K or so, depending on what happens in the next couple of chapters. ( Which leaves me with several options: )Anyway, I do feel bad about the OT3 fic...but I've posted two ficcy things today, which is more than I normally do, so I don't feel too badly about it. But neither do I want to make you all wait until Water Music is done being posted, so I'm thinking I'll post the first bit when I'm actually done with the children's book, regardless of the word count. There are three parts to it now; I'm working on a fourth, and brainstorming a fifth, so it's working to be a good little series. I think you'll all like it. Well, all of you who read OT3, anyway. It's not smutty in the least. Come on, flisters, I can barely write smut for two people, I really don't have a clue what to do with three. Hi, Dad.Edited to add: I sent a note to the original author of the remix fic I wrote which was nominated. She seemed okay with me accepting the nomination - so I will. Thanks for those who offered their opinions. Those who said I shouldn't accept, I hope you aren't terribly disappointed in my decision. | |

| On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice. Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials. We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait! As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work. | |

| This are the full-octane versions of yesterday's nonspoilery images, which I didn't want to throw in with the icons post since these are HUGE. Thanks to D-T.com (and their newly resurrected galleries) for these versions! ( Be warned, these are large! ) | |
