The Doctor leaned against the doorjamb, his hands in his pyjama pockets, his legs crossed at the ankles. He was the perfect personification of nonchalance. But his outward appearance belied his inner emotions as he remembered Rose’s earlier screams and cries as she fought to bring their son into the world. He never wanted to see her in such pain again and yet the resulting bundle of joy had made it all worthwhile.
He glanced around the room that had become a sanctuary for he and Rose in amongst their busy lives. The muted shades of brown and aqua reminded him of a life and a home so far away from here.
He silently thanked his Time Lord twin for making the sacrifice because he knew that there was no way he could ever give Rose and this life up.
As his eyes caught the people on the bed, all snuggled under the covers, matching heads of golden brown hair, messed up and strewn over the pillows, he thought he was the luckiest Time Lord metacrisis around, hell, he was the luckiest man alive. Because there, on that bed, were his family. Rose, Ellie and now little Dylan.
They were his world.
Interrupting his musings, Rose whispered tiredly, “C’mon, Doctor, come to bed.”
He smiled softy and made his way over to the bed and laid down facing Rose, his son and daughter lying between them. He lifted his arm and gently stroked his son’s newborn head, kissed Ellie’s forehead, and then reached over to Rose so he could surround all three with his embrace.
“Thank you Rose,” he whispered. “Thank you for loving me and giving me this wonderful family. I love you.”
“I love you, too, Doctor, and thank you for loving us,” she replied reverently. He leaned over Ellie and Dylan to kiss Rose passionately when he was interrupted by a sweet little voice.
“We love you, too, Daddy.”
The Doctor just smiled.
